I am a counseling psychologist and educator. I completed my doctorate at the University of Georgia and internship at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey – university behavioral health care, child and adolescent psychiatry unit in Newark, New Jersey. I am an American Psychological Association/Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Minority Fellow. I have over 20 years of experience in education from K-12 and higher education. I am a former elementary education teacher, school counselor, psychology instructor, assistant professor of counselor education, psychology discipline chair, and school counseling program coordinator. I was also a former Dean of Instruction and Accreditation Liaison in the Alabama Community College System.
My research has been published in journals that reflect my interests in the intersections of gender, race, counseling/psychology and education. Important areas of my work include investigating the characteristics of racial justice allies in education, multicultural practices used by k-12 teachers and school counselors, and contextual factors that lead school counselors to integrate multicultural practices and become active, vocal agents of social justice. In addition, I have contributed to the growing body of literature that better illuminates the experiences of African American women in the academy particularly in regards to mentoring, professional identity, and psychological well-being. My work also illustrates that I am primarily a mixed-methods researcher with a strong interest in instrumentation.
I relish the opportunity to share my passions in the fields of education and counseling psychology through training established and emerging educators, counselors, and psychologists to be culturally competent instructors or service providers, sensitive and assertive student and family advocates, and effective members of an educational community, human services agency, or faculty. I also take pride in directly providing my services and experience to the community at large. If i can be of service to you, your higher education institution, school district, or community agency, please feel free to contact me.
